the virus was probably targeted at WordPress - a blogging system that I have installed for a personal blog of mine at telkoth.net - but happened to worm its way into other files, causing pages to not come up. I've since patched up WordPress, mediawiki, and other third-party applications, to make sure this particular virus can't get in again!

since it was probably targeted at WordPress, it's unlikely it did anything to PsyPets, but I've done the password reset just in case. better safe than sorry!

it's possible some other pages are still down due to infection. the methods it uses to execute itself have been neutralized - the virus can no longer accomplish anything - but the pages it's on won't pull up until it's cleaned out. I'm working with DreamHost to locate all of the affected files.

it's also worth noting that PsyHelp - the psypets wiki - is still not coming up. I'm working on that as well.

since I'm not going to be making any updates for the foreseeable future, I'd like to give other people the opportunity to do so!

to that end, I've released the source code for PsyPets on Github. you can find it nya: https://github.com/ThatGuyBen/PsyPets.

if you've got some PHP, MySQL, and Linux skills, you should be able to get your very own copy of PsyPets up and running.

the copy I'm distributing does not include any of the PsyPets graphics - as many of these are not mine to give away - or any of the items, monsters, gathering locations, etc. these are all yours to define!

the code may also be interesting to hacky people who'd like to discover the inner workings of PsyPets (for good, or for evil).

I'm sure bugs and exploits within PsyPets will be revealed. the code is a hodge-podge mess that's slowly expanded and changed over the last eight years! (almost nine!) I'm not sure how severe these will be, and coupled with the fact that I will not be updating PsyPets, I've decided to disable the purchasing of Favor.

Is PsyPets DEAD?

you may be asking yourself this very question!

I'm not strictly against working on PsyPets again in the future, but for right now, I'd really like to focus my time and energy elsewhere. I've poured hours of work over the last eight to nine nine years on PsyPets! I even quit my day job a few years back, to work on PsyPets 100%. it's been a lot of fun, and I'm sure I can find some fun in it again in the future, but for right now, I want to work on other things.

right now, I'm playing around with Unity, RPG Maker, and Game Maker, starting and rarely-finishing little projects. PsyPets got started much the same way; I'd like to see if I can make anything else as great as PsyPets.

so is PsyPets dead? maybe a little. but not forever. think necromancy, or Jesus, or that Monty Python skit [razz]


but, yeah: why be selfish about the code? if someone out there wants to take PsyPets, and develop it themselves - fix all those bugs that have been bothering you, or add that feature you've always wanted - or even if someone just wants to develop a game based on some of PsyPets' code... why deny you that? I really love PsyPets, and I'd love to see what other people can do with it!
