About PsyPets

In PsyPets you take care of strange (and cute?)-looking pets, chat with other players, prepare food, collect rare items, build totem poles, build universes, and so so so much more. Started in late March of 2004, PsyPets is the result of 6 years of hobbyist programming, developed in part with player input!

PsyPets is not like other pet games:

  • It's the creation of one guy who just happens to like programming, and is happy to do it for free (though your contributions are always welcome )
  • It's a simulation of "human" behavior. Your pets act based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, personality theory, and common sense; they eat, grow, give birth, and can even die!
  • It's not not for kids (though you must be at least 13 to sign up), but it definitely caters more to 20 and 30-somethings than to young teens.

Requirements to Play

In short, PsyPets is a web browser-based game in which Javascript and cookies are used, but Java and Flash are not. PsyPets has been tested to work on most modern browsers. For more information, visit the Requirements to Play page (on the PsyPets wiki).

mysterious PsyPets downtime explained!

I don't know the technical reasons behind why one thing can cause another to happen... but I'm told by DreamHost that last night one of the server's hard drives - the one that keeps logs of database activity - completely filled up!

whenever a hard drive gets filled to capacity there's bound to be errors, though the particular error (1040) seems weird to me... but I guess that doesn't really matter. filled hard drive = downtime. we've seen this before on PsyPets, actually, though I think before a different hard drive filled up, causing a different error... though one that nevertheless took PsyPets down.

anyway, they say they fixed things up. I received a couple reports of other database-related issues from other players, however, so I'll be keeping my eye out. I'm also talking with DreamHost about how to prevent this sort of issue from happening again in the future.
